Bio:

Shannon (S. I.) Hayes has been telling tales for so long as she has been able to talk, and began writing them down shortly thereafter. She is the singular author of the In Dreams… Series, and a Paranormal Historical Romance called Centuries Of Blood: Becoming. Shannon is the Co-Author to Awakenings: The Wrath Saga, a Paranormal Drama likened to Big Brother meets The Real World of the Preternatural, as well as several blogs and host to her own website. S.I.Hayes.com.

In her own words… I have a mind that is easily distracted and prone to wandering. Tangents are my forte, and if you think my characters are going to fit a cookie cutter shape of any kind, think again. They live, they love, they eat, sleep and f***. I believe that people are inherently sexual creatures and my characters be they human or something altogether else are no exception.

I don’t adhere to a single genera, I toe the line on several and wouldn’t presume to be a master of any. So I suppose you could call me jack-of-all-trade-paperbacks.

I am a truth seeker, in my life, in my work. I’d apologize for it, but I kinda cannot help m’self. It is my best and worst personality trait, well mostly, being Bi-Polar I guess you could say that is the worse. But I believe that the disorder has made me, well… Me.

I have taken this life and twisted, carved, shaped and molded it in to the worlds of my characters. Albeit with a chainsaw, and it has made all the difference

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

“Just make it happen, God damn it! I don’t care how, bribe someone for all I care! Just get me my fucking paintings!”  Donnella Stone slammed the phone into its cradle, collapsing back into her chair. It spun a half turn, facing her toward the glass windows. She stared at the Manhattan skyline through tinted glass. Loving how it looked as the sun peeked through the late morning clouds over the Empire State Building. She exhaled deeply, trying to remember her anger management training. “One… Two… Three… Deep breaths…” She pushed a long red tendril of hair from her face as it fell from her usually well maintained up do. She pulled the octopus clamp from her hair letting the curls fall down her porcelain back and shoulders, releasing some of the tension brewing in her now pounding head. “Better.” She whispered more calmly, rubbing the back of her neck. She heard a small squeak behind her and turned back in her chair, to see her administrative assistant Harold still sitting in the chair opposite her desk, pen in hand waiting for her notes for the morning.

He did not seem to be miffed in any way by her outburst or her need to take a few moments to rejoin him in reality. In fact he rather liked seeing Donnella taking a moment to unwind and let her hair down. As she so infrequently did either. A small smile crossed his lips as she cleared her throat, putting her hair back up.

“Okay, Harold, where was I before we were so rudely interrupted by rubbish?” She asked her pale green eyes settling on him and his Brooks Brothers suit once more. She loved that he dressed so well for the office. It said something about how he felt about his job. Not to mention how well she paid him and the rest of the staff. She knew she could be a bit of a dragon, and paid to the effect, it kept lawsuits for psychological scarring to a minimum.

“You were saying that you didn’t want to go to the Governor’s Christmas Party stag this year. Which means picking from the pool, or finding a new suitor within a month, Miss Stone.”

Donnella blew air through her vermillion lips. “Let’s see what I can find. I’m bored with Samuel and Claude. See if Wyden is available. ”

“Need I remind you his contract ran out two weeks ago so you sent him to Florence for good behavior?”

“Ahh… That’s right.” She smiled standing up, sliding her French manicured toes into a pair of four and one half inch black leather heels with fire engine red soles.

“Are those the Louboutin’s?” Harold asked as she rounded the desk, with a smirk.

“They are. So eat your heart out.”

“The Dorothy’s would be all over you.” He smiled. “You have a meeting downtown in forty-five. Should I have the car brought around now or will you be driving your self today?”

“Bring the car, and you can come too, I’m stopping by the Studio before lunch, I want to make sure that those paintings have the right lighting. Can’t be too careful with Rembrandt.”

***

Matthew Mayfield opened his eyes, and climbed out of bed, scratching his ribs he looked bleary eyed at the clock. 9:07 A.M.

“Shit.” He spat getting up tripping over his stonewashed jeans on the floor. Falling to the ground he watched as his pit bull terrier mix Pepper cocked her head at him in confusion as she gnawed on his sneaker. “Pepper! No!” He lamented crawling across the floor reaching out for the shoe and the rapidly growing twelve week old puppy. She picked up and ran, shoe in mouth out the bedroom door. He got up, pulling on his jeans. “I don’t have time for this.” He mumbled, looking for his work boots, his standby shoes. They were covered in paint and cement from work, but at least they weren’t slimed and chewed.

Pulling on a moderately clean shirt, he grabbed his jacket and portfolio, hoping that the Listerine wisp would take care of his breath. “Janet? Can you walk her! I’m already gonna be late!” He pleaded to the thin brunette sitting on the couch in their shared apartment watching the cartoon network, smoking a clove cigarette with a beer in the other hand.

“Yeah, sure. Hey where you headed, anyhow?”

“I got that meeting at that gallery in the Village remember?”

“Awe, yeah, man, good luck. You better hurry or you’ll miss the train.”

“I know!” He ran out the door, hearing Pepper whine, he stopped and turned back picking the puppy up. “Daddy’s gotta go. But I promise I’ll take you to the park after. If this goes well, we’ll have a lot to celebrate.” He kissed her on her pink little nose, putting her down and was out the door.

***

“No, you don’t understand.” Matthew insisted. “I had an appointment. Matthew Mayfield, for one thirty. I came all the way from Connecticut for this!”

“Sir keep your voice down. Show a modicum of decorum would you? Even if you’d had, this appointment.” The receptionist looked him up and down. Paint covered tan work boots, long legs covered by dingy stonewashed jeans, a sweater tucked haphazardly into them, covered by a long leather jacket. The only thing appealing about him was his face, but even that was absconded by dark horned rimmed glasses. “It’s well passed two now. Neither Mr. Walsh nor Miss. Stone have the time for you if you cannot make the time for them. So if you please.”

“If I could just leave this with you.” He pulled out his portfolio, nervously, as the clattering of doors swinging open assaulted his ears followed by shouts.

“Get it done!” A woman’s voice demanded. The power and the echo, caused Matthew to lose his grip on the portfolio and the contents of it fell to the floor.

The receptionist, sighed heavily, and got up quickly seeing Donnella, as she came from the showroom. “You idiot. Are you trying to get me fired?” The receptionist barked. Trying to help him pick up the photos splayed across the floor.

Matthew ignored the irate girl, as he was for the second time that day crawling across a floor. “Fuck me.” He whispered under his breath. As he reached for a photo, only to have his hand nearly stomped on by a black heel with a red sole. He drew his eyes trailing up the curves of the leg to a black flounced hem. He pushed himself backward, embarrassed, and stuttering an apology as the woman bent down to pick up the photo under foot.

***

Donnella’s eyes surveyed the photo, it was of an African American woman, nude, arms crossed plumping the high points of her chest but hiding the nipples, the rest was turned so the shadows fell to mask her lower region, which accentuated the curve of her hip, down to the metal and plastic prosthetic that was her foreleg. Behind her in the distance was a torn and tattered American flag, and the message Remember Us…

She looked over the top of the photo to the young man still sitting on the ground. “Is this yours?” She raised an uncertain eyebrow.

“Y-Yes ma’am.” He sputtered, as he was helped to his feet by two very large men in dark suits, who did not unhand him.

Donnella waved her hand at them lightly and they released him. “Do you have more like this?”

He nodded. “Stephanie? Pencil him in. I’m taking my lunch now, I’ll see him after I’ve finished. Harold, clear my afternoon.” She looked at the young man again. Not completely unfortunate.

Harold glanced over his shoulder with a nod. “Yes, Ma’am. Right on it.”

***

“Who was that?” Matthew asked stunned as he pushed the last of his photos back into the portfolio.

That? That was Donnella Stone.”

Matthew’s eyes widened, and his mouth dropped open, “I thought she’d be older.”

“Everyone always does…” Stephanie grumbled. “You can have a seat over there. When she comes back, she’ll let me know if she hasn’t forgotten you.”

I Am Not “Just A Nurse”

To all the nurses out there … Thanks for your dedication!!!

The Fat Girl Running

I am sure you might have heard a small ripple in social media over the last 24 hours about the Miss America pageant and Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, who beautifully gave a monologue about being “just a nurse”.  I am also quite sure you may have heard a bigger ripple caused by the ladies on The View for making fun of her and putting down the 3.3 million men and women who call nursing their profession….I am one of them.  And I am not “just a nurse”.

I applaud Miss Johnson in coming out on a beauty pageant stage, dressed in scrubs, to talk about her talent.  While the ladies on The View might not see this as a talent, being a nurse does take quite a lot of talent.  It takes talent to put a urinary catheter in a patient that is combative…to find a vein in a chunky…

Wednesay’s Writing & Words

On this week's Wednesday, Writing & Words post I'm interviewing author Jeremy Breitenbach and we're learning about his debute novel, The Gateway.

jeremys book On the morning of Monday March 3, 2059 in a laboratory located on the University of Chicago campus in Chicago, Illinois, world renowned physicist, 38-year-old Dr. Richard Caulman and his colleagues Dr. Lawrence Jones and Dr. Jonathan Reynolds are about to initiate the inaugural test of Dr. Caulman's revolutionary dimensional gateway. Dr. Caulman believes that if his gateway works properly it will revolutionize the way people travel and eliminating the need for any kind of transportation

Upon initiating the gateway, Dr. Reynolds realizes that they didn't instruct the gateway to open in California, which was their intention. Unfortunately for Dr. Caulman, the gateway has opened on another planet located in another dimension.

Before Dr. Caulman is able to close the gateway, six humanoids accompanied by six creatures emerge from the other side. What do these humanoids and creatures have in store for the inhabitants of the Earth? Can Dr. Caulman stop whatever it is that they have planned? And will he also be able to protect his wife, Jennifer, and children, Richie and Beth, from the alien threat?

After the humanoids return and reveal their plans for the inhabitants of the Earth, will Dr. Caulman and the other government officials that become involved in defending the planet be
able to kill the humanoids and save the planet?

Interview

1. Why don't you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Jeremy Breitenbach. I am legally blind with cerebral palsy. I use Braille. I've been writing since I was 15. I started out with writing original stories based off of
The Legend of Zelda and original stories based off a '90's cartoon I love called Adventures
of Sonic the Hedgehog, but in the years since I stopped writing the Adventures of Sonic the
Hedgehog stories, but still continued to write The Legend of Zelda stories. I evetually
created an original series based on The Legend of Zelda consisting of 3 books so far. I also began writing my own original stories based on the anime Dragon Ball Z (which I'm a HUGE fan of); so far writing 3 original Dragon Ball Z stories. In 2009, I started writing my first real book; a book for adults entitled The Gateway
finishing it in 2011. While writing that I began writing children's books. I've written four (so far). Those books being: The Abduction of Benjamin Williams, My Dog George, Tim's Story (which I am still working on), and Lost in Wisconsin. I also wrote a how-to book entitled
How To Read and Write Braille. In 2014, I came across Author Ronnie C. Dawson, CEO and
founder of Broken Bars Publishing and told him about myself and all 6 of my books. I
e-mailed him The Gateway, and long story short I published it through them. It's available on Broken Bars Publishing's website, Amazon in paperback and Kindle, and Barns and Noble's
website for Nook. Here's what all 6 of my books are about - How To Read and Write Braille:
details how to read and write Braille, The Gateway: a physicist opens a gateway on a planet within another dimension which leads to an alien invasion; violence and strong language, The Abduction of Benjamin Williams: a family gets betrayed by a neighbor they thought they could trust, My Dog George: a boy's dog runs away, Tim's Story: A boy becomes an orphan after his parents are killed in a tragic car crash. (None of the characters in this book are based on actual people. The basis for this book was inspired by the story told in Contemporary Christian Music artist Steven Curtis Chapman's song "When Love Takes You In", and Tim's red hair was inspired by the hair color of the orphan boy in Steven Curtis Chapman's song "All I Really Want".), and Lost in Wisconsin: a boy gets separated from his parents while they are going on vacation, and due to his dyslexia boards the wrong plane. Excerpts from all 6 of these books can be found under the "Notes" tab of both my official Facebook page and my personal timeline (for those that wish to "Follow" me). Here's what the books in my original The Legend of Zelda series are about - The Hyrulean Civil War: The Saga of King Link, Book 1 (a civil war breaks out in Hyrule), The Rezlorian Empire: The Saga of King Link, Book 2 (an emperor wants to conquer Hyrule), and The Great Moblin Invasion: The Saga of King Link, Book 3 (the King of the Moblins plans to invade the Upper World). Here's what my Dragon Ball Z original stories are about - The Return of King Piccolo (King Piccolo returns to Earth to seek revenge on Goku), Turles' Revenge (Several years after his defeat, Turles escapes from Hell in another attempt at taking over the Earth), and The Return of Garlic Jr. (The shattering of dimensions caused by Janemba destroys the barrier which separates the Dead Zone from Earth's dimension once again releasing Garlic Jr). Excerpts from The Legend of Zelda original series and my original Dragon Ball Z stories can only be found under the "Notes" tab of my personal timeline. (They will not be put into Notes on my official Facebook page. So if you are interested in reading any of these particular stories feel free to "Follow" me.)
Are you married? No. Any kids? No.

Where do you live? Cincinnati, Ohio.
2. What genre do youwrite?
For me, it varies but mostly sci-fi, horoor (for adults) and various (for children).

Why do you like that particular type of story?
I like horror because of Stephen King. He's my inspiration and my favorite author. And his books can be really engaging.
3. What are yourfondest memories of writing or reading?
When I first began writing at fifteen. And for reading when I first read To Kill a Mockingbird. 4. What are some of your favorite authors and books?
My favorite author is Stephen King. Some of my favorite books are: IT, The Shining, Doctor Sleep, Under the Dome, Cell, 11/22/63, The Stand, Cujo, Carrie, various short stories by Stephen King, To Kill a Mockingbird, and many other titles.
5. If you could describe what writing means to you, how would you do so?
It means a lot to me. I've just found a lot of enjoyment out of writing.
6. What is your favorite snack & drink while reading/writing? I don't eat or drink anything while I write.
7. Which book do you think was best adapted into a movie? Well, it's more of a miniseries, but my answer is The Stand and also The Shining miniseriesddWhy? Because both of them followed their respective books extremely well.
8. Which book was the least successful adaptation into a movie?
The original movie of The Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick. Why? Because it did a poor job in following the book. But it still is a good movie regardless.
9. Write your favorite quote and explain why you picked it? "For we live by faith, not by sight." 2 Corinthians 5:7 I chose it because it's always been one of my favorite quotes of all time.
10. Anyother things you'd like to share?
Once I publish my next book, Tim's Story (which I'm still working on) I'd like to use the sale of it to benefit Show Hope. Show Hope is the organization Contemporary Christian Music artist, Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife, Mary Beth Chapman started in 2004. Show Hope helps assist families in adopting as well as helping care for and find families for orphans all over the world.

Interview

Why don’t you tell us a little about yourself? Are you married? Any kids? Where do you live?

I am KL Dierking (Katrina). I reside in central NC with my husband and 4 children ages 19,18,16 and 3. Writing is my passion along with encouraging women who have suffered and survived sexual abuse, dealing with the other side of sexual abuse (PTSD, depression, suicidal thoughts/tendencies)  as well as educating women on the signs and how to keep their children safe from abuse.

I was sexually abused by the man who adopted my at the age of 4. He sexually and physically abused me for the next 12 years. I spent many years afterwards abusing myself and feeling as if I was unworthy of love. I was self-destructive and angry. Only by the grace and mercy of God was I able to turn my life around and change my future.

I have spent my entire adult life in the medical field holding several degrees and certifications including Firefighter I/II and EMT-Paramedic. I recently chose to leave the medical field to come home to work and raise my 3 year old the way I believe God intended for our family.

I also have an online homeschool and educational resource company called Mr. Row’s Adventures. Mr. Row is a stuffed monkey who travels around the world staying with host homeschooling families. The families take Mr. Row on educational field trips in their area and in turn, I create educational supplies and materials for the families to use in their homeschooling classroom.

What genre do you write? Why do you like that particular type of story?

My genre of choice is Inspirational Fiction. I have written two novels and am currently working on a post-rapture novel series but recently decided to write my first young readers chapter book, also a series.

What are your fondest memories of writing or reading?

Writing has always been therapy for me. It was my safe place and the one place no one could harm me.

What are some of your favorite authors and books?

Karen Kingsbury’s book One Tuesday Morning and Beyond Tuesday

If you could describe what writing means to you, how would you do so?

Writing has saved my life. Through my writing, I have been able to tell my story of sexual and physical abuse through the fictional characters I create. I’ve been able to go places in my mind that I may never truly experience.

What is your favorite snack & drink while reading/writing?

I always drink coffee while I write. Well, I drink coffee nearly all hours of the day. I don’t really snack while writing.

Write your favorite quote and explain why you picked it?

“I won’t spend my life as nothing.” A Knight’s Tale. As a child, my mother told me every single day that I was stupid and unlovable. I believed her for far too long. This quote reminds me that her words do not dictate my future and my future is what I make it.

This week’s Foodish Friday – Shrimp Scampi

It’s been a while since I’ve done my Foodish Friday. Yes I have been cooking but just haen’t had time to post anything. 😉 This week I’m posting my recipe for shrimp scampi.

Yes, I know I post a lot of seafood dishes . That is because my daughter is a pescatarian and I’m always trying to find new ways to cook seafood. I’ll expalian want that is a little later. Right now let’s get into the food!!

This is a wondeful dish because it incorporaters all my favorite flavors. The shrimp is sweet with a garlicy,  lemmony and buttery sauce. A little kick from red pepper flakes sets off the sweetness of the shrimp. Then you pour it over noodles like spaghetti or linguini. Yum!!! What’s not to love?

Although I use some butter in this dish, I like to lighten it up and use more olive oil. My daughter would probably make it with no butter. I’m not sure who her is mother is because I love butter and put in in eveything.  She doesn’t use it in anything. LOL!! You can play around with the portions to fit your tastes.

Same thing with the spices. I tend to make it a little on the spicy side. You can cut the portions down or add more to suit your palette.

Shrimp Scampi

150

Ingredients:

Pasta – cooked

Shrimp – 1 bag frozen (raw)

1 C. olive oil

1/2 – whole stick butter

1/2 C. chopped onion

2-5 Tbsp minced garlic

1 lemon

1-2 tsp sea salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

2 tsp old bay seasning

2 tsp red pepper flakes

2 tsp lemmon pepper

1/2 -whole of cayanne pepper

1/2 C. Parmesan cheese

While the pasta is cooking, work on the shrimp. If you haven’t already defrosted it you can put it in a bowl and run warm over it. I use the frozen, deveined but the shells are still on. After defrosting them take the s off. If your using fresh shrimp you will need to deveine it. Here’s a vieo on how to do that.  https:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXkuM2YJ1_A I find the frozen shrimp works just as well and is easier.

After the shrimp is done set aside.

Add the oil,  garlic and onion in a large skillet and cook for a few minutes. Then add the butter until it’s melted. Next, add the shrimp and sprinkle all the spices over it. After a few minutes turn the shrimp over and cook on the other side. Lastly, zest the lemmon and squeeze the juice over the shrimp. If the lemmon isn’t very juicy you can use 2.

Drain the pasta and add into the skillet untill all the pasat is caoted.

Then add shredded parmesan cheese. You can also use the grated cheese in the can if you don’t have the shredded, but real cheese is always better.

Enjoy!!

What is a pescatarian?

Definition: Pescatarian (sometimes spelled pescetarian with an e) is a word sometimes used to describe those who abstain from eating all meat and animal flesh with the exception of fish. In other words, a pescatarian maintains a vegetarian diet with the addition of fish and other sea foods such as shrimp and lobster.
